McLean’s Pub Call Of The Wilde: Super Bowl Sunday

February 4, 2018

By Brian Wilde

Here it is… the big day, and no, sadly, it is not the big day of the top teams in the Atlantic facing each other  – the Senators and the Habs. It’s the Eagles and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  The time waster until then is two also-rans meeting at the Bell Centre.

If I hired a manager and he picked those players which you have mentioned I would be very worried about his hockey IQ. But if this same general manager had many years playing in the NHL at this position I would first check how he played his position when he was in the league. & then If his style of play was very similar to those that he has picked and have failed I would be even more worried that my general manager is living in the past. But ,if this same general manager stated the defense for The Canadiens was better than last year I would think of firing him. And, if I remembered during this dismal season that my general manager said at the very beginning of the season that Weber and Benn would be The Canadiens’ number 1 defense pairing I would certainly fire him , & drive him to the airport. Then I would make Timmins the general manager and hire a new and very credible & creative president to oversee all hockey operations . The problem dear fans in not in our players, but rather in our management that has been sub par for at least 25 years.

Case and point: Habs picks on the team (31, 27, 11, 14, 67, 79 until this year anyway) are happy in Montreal, they usually re-sign (at their value mind you) and want to stay. Your theory makes sense.

Great article! MB was right was he was saying, build through the draft. Hopefully, this will be the new philosophy going forward and Timmons can actually do his thing.
