The 17-year-old is already playing a second-line role for Lulea in the SHL after a solid performance in the U-20 Summer Showcase that went a long way towards him cracking Sweden’s WJC roster, the only draft-eligible player aside from Dahlin to make the team. By the end of the tournament, Lundestrom was Sweden’s second-line center and playing a solid all-around role. While some scouts are still not certain of his offensive upside, he has worked his way into the discussion to be the first center chosen in next June’s draft.
NHL Scouts Comments
Nov. 21, 2017 – He’s a good hockey player. I really liked him in the summer…smart, hard-working center.
Dec. 4, 2017 – I didn’t get much out of him last time I saw him. He plays a solid two-way game, he’s good defensively. He didn’t create much offensively but those young guys don’t get to play an offensive role in the SHL..it’s like an 18-year-old playing in the NHL.
Jan. 17, 2018 – A really good skater, good worker, good engine. Probably errs a little too much on the defensive side…I like that. But he’s got skill too. He’s a good two-way center. I think Lundestrom is ahead of Hayton at this point..obviously a little bit older, but he plays with the men..I already know that he’s going to be a good two-way player. If you had to look at them both..in five. He’s a real good pick right now…he’s a safe pick. He’s a good player already.
Jan. 21, 2018 – Is there a center that pushes the top wingers? Hayton and Lundestrom don’t have the talent of Zadina or Svechnikov, so you have to put them ahead. they’re good players, they’re both solid two-way centers..but they’re no better than second-line centers.
Jan. 27, 2018 – He just kept getting better at the World Junior. I like him, he’s a good hockey player. A good skater, strong, smart.
