Started the season slowly before heating up in January and really catching scouts’ attention at the 5 Nations Cup in mid February where he led the tournament in scoring and the US to a Gold Medal. Th smooth-skating center plays an intelligent two-way game, and has the size/skating combo that would make him a first-round possibility if he ever displayed a consistent work ethic.
NHL Scouts’ Comments
Feb. 18, 2017 – I thought it was his coming out party at the 5 Nations Cup. He really demonstrated what type of player he is and what he could do. He played good
Mar. 7, 2017 – I thought it was coming..I thought he was going to be a real good player…but he’s not real hard….not sure how much he really wants it.
Apr. 9, 2017 – For me it’s all about his inconsistency. He’s had a very inconsistent year. He’s literally a different player depending on what night you go see him. He’s a center with size and really good skating. He has NHL feet. On his good days he’s really competitive, he’s got some bite. Last year I thought he was going to be a Ryan Kesler type player, hard to play against, a two-way center that can skate, but also chip in and score. I don’t think he has high-end offence but I think he has some. The biggest thing for me that’s been really weird this year is some games he’s a prick…or he can be really indifferent…last and loop away from plays. Last summer he was hurt and then he re-aggravated it this year…and then he dealt with some stuff down the stretch injury-wise. One thing is I don’t think he likes the coach there a lot. We could be looking at this guy in a year if he’s taken in the second round and go “F***”. Hard not to really concentrate on the good with this kid, and realize he was playing through some injuries and had a coach he didn’t see eye-to-eye with. His dad played in the NHL..you like that. He’s very serious, very business-like, kind of a quiet kid who just works hard. I could see him exploding at the U-18’s and being a big riser there. He’ll be handful there, playing with Tkachuk.
May 6, 2017 – Norris played with a sternum injury in the U-18 tournament but still played very well. He may have more offensive upside than Poehling.
