NHL Scouts’ Quotes #5

Here are some thoughts on eight 2021 NHL draft prospects from an NHL crossover scout:
Luke Hughes D – Just a great skater but I don’t know if he has any sense of the game. He likes to join the rush, but I don’t know if he knows how to play defence, he’s more of a rover. Maybe not top 20. I don’t know…I have to watch him more..he’s going to have to show me some better sense.
Tyler Boucher C – Big, strong…there’s a use for this guy for sure. He’s just not a genius out there. He’ll be able to fit a role. He looks like a third line guy. 25-35. He works so hard; you like the effort that he puts out.
Shai Buium D -This guy could be…he’s 6-3, really smart…I’d like him to get a little more jump in his game but..he’s a smart puck guy. I don’t know where you get those guys.
Scott Morrow D – Maybe a little more projection on him than Buium. He’s a little more like Hughes..only he’s a stronger guy. He’s just a little bit wild out there too like Hughes.
Matthew Coronato LW – I love him. Good little player. I have him ahead of (Samoskevich) right now. He just plays the same every night, every night..hard, hard. He’s got skill, he’s fearless, I love him. A good player. You never get a bad one out of him. A little worried about him going to Harvard. Is he going to be a doctor or is he going to be a hockey player?
Mackie Samoskevich C – He plays like a little bitch sometimes, he drives me nuts. He’s incredibly inconsistent. Very talented, though.
Daniil Chayka D – I’m not going to put a whole lot of stock into how he played at the WJC at his age. He’s big, he can skate. He’s young, and the Russians never bring the young guys, so I think his role is to just be as simple as possible. He might end up being top 15. Watching him play junior he was pretty good. I’m not saying he was a genius out there last year but he was so young. I think he’d really be a standout in Guelph.
Fabian Lysell RW – He played a good game for me. He looks like a pretty good skill guy. Not big, but he competes.
Tristan Broz C –
Scout #1 -Not consistently hard on pucks. But I like his talent level. Looked like a first-round possibility.

Scout #2 – I saw him this week. On the outside most of the time but he does have some skill.
Stanislav Svozil D – Average-sized dman, somewhat competitive, showed good energy, physical enough to separate his man from the puck. Skates well in straight lines. Has to work on his quickness and mobility but not likely a future issue, more about strength, has some puck moving, vision and touch. His executions were mostly positive. Reads and positioning were mostly positive, but he can get lost in pressure, can wander at times. Sense looks solid, maybe not high-end upside, but played a significant role and was pretty good for a youngster. I think of him as a third rounder right now, but he could be a second. I’d like to see him play in his own group.
Matthew Knies C – He’s been shitty. He’s been disappointing. Saw a couple of early games and you go “oh yeah..wow” and now he’s no good. He runs right into walls (loses the puck).
