Choose Your Colours: PK vs Gallagher

February 10, 2018

By Brian Wilde

It’s too early to be certain for Habs fans to already be just assessing talent but that’s where they are already. The results matter little but the second half would be better for the organization if players like Drouin, Mete and Scherbak could look good down the stretch. Here’s Brian Wilde’s evaluation.

Great stuff, Brian. Tonight was line in the sand night. People who want to live in the past and dwell on the Subban trade face a tough choice—because almost everybody who is a fan of this team loves Brendan Gallagher. They can love PK all they want, and continue to rag on Bergevin…or they can get over it and rally behind this team. Yes, this season is a wash, and if your prediction of a Preds-Bruins Finals comes true I will be cheering on Subban and the Preds. But it’s time to move ahead. Are you a PK Subban fan or a Habs fan? One man or a team you’ve cheered since you were a child? Because it’s been 18 months now. Clearly the Habs players, the guys who still wear the CH, are tired of all this. Many fans are too.

I hope there is someone who can “make Therrien a better person”. The point that Subban would not have been traded if Julien was the coach was very insightful. Comments on the excellent play of Galchenyuk & Drouin were also very nice to hear as it was to watch Julien talk & gently pat Galchenyuk on the shoulder on the bench. This was a pat of praise. This young man needs more of this & Julien realizes this. Therrien did not . I really don’t care about all the talk as the boys stick their tongues out from competing tree houses. It could be jealousy or it could be pride. . Howe, Believeau The Rocket etc.. did all their talking on the ice. There was so much pride displayed on the ice that you did not have talk about it after the game. Now ,that fact that you are starting to loose your breath talking about a great game is the most optimistic thing I have witnessed about a Canadiens’ game this year. If you , Brian Wilde, can’t breathe The Canadiens must have a future. Thanks Daniel

If I am going to war, Gallagher is the guy I’m taking, Red, White Blue are my colours

If Gallagher’s a sergeant and you need that machine gun taken out, he’s my man too. If I need a general to win the war, I choose Subban. Different skill sets and leadership qualities.

I’m all red/white/blue. If the Preds meet the much-hated Bruins in the finals… I’ll have to root for the Bruins. I don’t think the Montreal media could take PK parading through the city with the Cup.

I realize I’m among the minority of Montreal Canadiens fans, circa the 2017-18 season, but my God, I’m sick and tired of Brand Subban becoming the entire show every time he plays his old team.
He’s moved his corporate offices to Nashville. That means he’s only coming back to Montreal for NHL hockey games and branding sessions.
Yes, Mr. I Gotta Be Me is a legitimate Norris candidate this season and probably should have retired a Montreal Canadien. And why that didn’t happen was probably due more to management arrogance than any legitimate hockey reasons. They saw the big personality, didn’t know how to handle it, and so felt threatened in their authority.
But, like so many, many other NHL players before him, PK Subban plays for another group of fans now. And they sure do love him, almost as must as as a significant percentage of the Habs fanbase still does, nearly two years later.
I wish I could say that the last time we witnessed such an outpouring of sobbing and teeth-gnashing over a former player was when Saku Koivu was so unceremonioulsy sent packing.
But that wasn’t even close. This obsession over a player who is not likely to ever wear the jersey again is unprecedented.

(I realize Mr. Wilde wasn’t doing much teeth-gnashing here, so it’s probably unfair to post a diatribe like this here, but wow, just about every site that’s a forum for Habs fans to vent overflows, month after month, with laments for this dearly departed defenceman. If he ever hoists the Stanley Cup over his head, a lot of people wearing Canadiens jerseys will have to be talked off ledges.)
